FRASER RIVER SOCKEYE SALMON NEED YOUR HELP! More than a decade ago, the Cohen Commission investigated the collapse of Fraser River sockeye salmon runs. The comprehensive inquiry concluded that infectious diseases and open-pen fish farms were among the most urgent risks to wild salmon.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has since promised that his government will implement all 75 of the commission’s recommendations to protect wild salmon.
Now an important deadline looms.
Recommendation #19 clearly states that the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans should close open net fish farms in the Discovery Islands by September 30, 2020.
To date, there’s been no word from the government about whether it intends to meet this deadline — even as this year’s sockeye runs on the Fraser are expected to be one of the worst on record.
Ecojustice is urging Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Bernadette Jordan to act promptly to close fish farms in B.C.’s Discovery Islands and protect wild salmon.
